Traffic through the waterway has been at a near-standstill since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in late February and Tehran threatened to attack ships in the strait. Iran has said it laid mines along the most frequently used routes of the narrow waterway, and a senior US Defense Department official says clearing the strait of mines could take six months.
